Many women begin pregnancy knowing they are HIV positive and are already on antiretroviral therapy (ART). However, because of the HIV/STD testing laws implemented in Florida in 2006, many pregnant women discover they are HIV positive as a result of routine HIV testing during pregnancy. Proper treatment during pregnancy, labor and delivery and for the infant post-partum can reduce the risk of mother-to-infant transmission to less than 2%.

Clinicians who are not familiar with the treatment protocol and recommendations have a valuable resource that is readily available 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year from anywhere.  In an article written for the AETC National Resource Center Network News, Shannon Weber, MSW, the Perinatal Hotline Coordinator for the National HIV/AIDS Clinicians' Consultation Center (NCCC)  in San Francisco states that clinicians caring for HIV-infected pregnant women and their infants want to provide the highest quality care. Clinicians at any level of experience can benefit from up-to-date information and real-time consultation from experts.

The NCCC also operates a Perinatal HIV Clinicians Network, a national directory of perinatal HIV experts linked to the Hotline. This service can connect clinicians to local resources. These connections are tailored to each location and clinical situation in collaboration with regional and local AETCs and other resources to link patients to care.
